Spring After School Program 2017

Wednesdays March 1 - May 10

First Generation Farmers’ Spring After School Farm Program is on Wednesdays from 3:00pm- 5:00pm for kids 5-15 years old. We are offering three different Spring sessions for your family to participate in. Each session consists of three consecutive Wednesday lessons focused on exciting farm topics!

Session 1: March 1st, 8th, and 15th- From Slop to Soil

Kids will learn the importance of soil through exploring and learning about the many ways and ingredients farmers use to compost. Kids can expect to get a bit dirty learning how horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, worms and food scraps allow a seed to grow into food.

Session 2: April 5th, 12th, and 19th- The Life and Adventures of Plants!

Participating in this session will mean learning how to grow your own garden. We will plant seeds, transplant starts, and create a garden. We will also explore what bugs and creatures create a healthy habitat for our plants.

Session 3: April 26th, May 3rd, and 10th- The Story of Our Food

Harvest, wash, prepare, and market. This is the story of how farmers provide nutrition to our community. Students will not only learn different ways of preparing fresh fruits and veggies (like in a solar oven or in our outdoor educational kitchen), but also learn what it takes to get food to a Farmers’ Market and eventually into someone’s stomach. Come early on the last day to be your child’s “customer” at the mock market. Kids will see the importance of fresh food in our diet.

Due to generous donations toward the education program at FGF, we are able to offer each three week session for $60 per child. A light snack will be included in each lesson. Space is limited and make-up classes are offered throughout the year for those who miss a class. Bring a water bottle and ‘Farm clothes’ to get dirty in. The sessions are lead by our Youth Educator, Chris, and an assistant at First Generation Farmers’ educational campus: 1230 Delta Rd. Knightsen CA, 94548.
